The occlusal, or biting, surface of your child’s permanent molars and premolars likely have deep pits and fissures in the tooth enamel. This make the teeth more efficient at chewing and grinding the tough foods they consume. Unfortunately, they can also gradually trap food detritus and plaque buildup, bolstering their chances of suffering tooth decay.

One simple method to prevent this from befalling your son or daughter is to have dental sealants applied to the biting surfaces of their molars and premolars at Zicherman, Lago, and Associates, PC.

It’s best to do this upon the completion of their regular dental checkup and cleaning. This way we know the tooth enamel in the area is completely free of plaque and other bacterial matter.

Once Dr. Federico Lago has painted the resin onto the biting surfaces, he will use a special ultraviolet light to cure and harden it to the tooth enamel. Once this is completed, the dental sealants will last for many years, resisting the wear and tear of chewing food and brushing your teeth.

It’s important to keep in mind that even though the biting surfaces of the teeth are protected, your son or daughter will still need to brush and floss the teeth regularly.
